Emily Jean Stone was born November 6, 1988 the town of Scottsdale, Arizona to her mother Krista, a homemaker, and her father Jeff Stone, a contractor. Two years later, Emma's brother Spencer was born. Her grandfather was of Swedish descent, and his family's surname was anglicized to "Stone" when immigrating to the States through Ellis Island. Other ancestors of Emma also lived in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
She is known professionally as Emma Stone the American actress. Emma chose the name "Emma" when she registered for the Screen Actors Guild, there was already a listing for an "Emily Stone". Her family and friends however still call her Emily. She first chose "Riley Stone" as her professional name, but after a guest appearance on Malcolm in the Middle, she decided she was more comfortable with Emma, a nickname her mother had given her.
As an infant, Emma came down with baby colic, a condition causing frequent screaming. This resulted in the development of nodules or calluses on her vocal chords. This is how Emma's low-pitched husky voice came to be.
2000 - 2004

As a child, Emma attended Sequoya Elementary School and then Cocopah Middle School for sixth grade. She was home schooled for two years, during which time she appeared in sixteen productions at Valley Youth Theatre, including: A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail, The Princess and the Pea, Cinderella, The Wiz, Titanic, Honk!, The Little Mermaid, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, Alice in Wonderland, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as well as performing with the theater's improv comedy troupe.
2005 - 2009

As Emma went on into her teenage years, she attended Xavier College Preparatory, an all-girl Catholic high school, as a freshman for one semester. It was around this time that Emma devised a plan to convince her parents to allow her to drop out of school and move to Los Angeles. The PowerPoint presentation she created, backed by Madonna's Hollywood and itself entitled Project Hollywood, was successful and she and her mother moved to LA with her schooling completed at home while she spent her days auditioning.
In 2010, Stone voiced the character Mazie in Marmaduke, and starred in the comedy Easy A. It was the role of Olive Penderghast in Easy A that truly put her on the map as a star.
2010 - Present

In 2011, she appeared in Crazy, Stupid, Love. and starred in The Help. This same year Emma began dating her Amazing Spider-Man co-star, Andrew Garfield. In 2012, Emma was seen playing Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man, a reboot of the Spider-Man film series.
